Description:

Europe, Germany, Leutenberg, ca. 1740 CE. A large vellum document, probably a description of land ownership passing hands, written in German. Attached to the document is a nicely preserved red wax seal on a wooden base. The seal gives a date - "MDCCXL" - and around its edge are several written words, some readable, including "Leutenberg", a town in the Thuringian Forest. The rest of the seal has a complex, slightly fantastical image of a horse and rider flanked by attendants and surrounded by small coats of arms. Size of seal: 6.05" W (15.4 cm); size of document: 26.7" W x 15" H (67.8 cm x 38.1 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection; ex-collection of Joel Malter, Los Angeles, California, USA

  • Condition: Wear commensurate with age, including fold marks, darkening along edges, small tears on edges, and tiny stains. Words are largely still readable, although the ink is faded, especially in the center of the document. The seal is darkened around the edges, with some wear to the surface so that the words are difficult to read in places.
