Description:

Ancient Greece, Classical period, ca. 400 BCE. A finely modeled pottery applique depicting Silenus, with vivid facial features, long mustache, full beard, fringed coiffure, and pointy ears modeled in relief and nicely painted in black and red hues. Silenus was the mythical teacher and drinking companion of Dionysus, Greek god of wine, winemaking, and the grape harvest - and furthermore, by virtue of the inebriated state brought about by the ingestion of such fermented libations of the vine, the deity associated with madness, theatre, and spiritual ecstacy. A wonderful piece, especially for any oenophiles (wine lovers) out there! Custom stand. Size: applique measures 2.25" L x 1.625" W (5.7 cm x 4.1 cm); 2" W x 2.5" H (5.1 cm x 6.4 cm) on stand
