Description:

Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ndaaka (Ndaka), mid 20th century CE. This is an oval-shaped mask depicting a face with a short, straight nose, narrowed eyes, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. There are drilled holes around the sides with some remaining attachment of perishable materials, like raffia, feathers, or quills. The mask is carved of wood and decorated with organic pigments in a design that suggests tattooing or scarification. Masked rituals are a major part of the initiation ceremonies in Ndaaka culture that allow young people to become adults. Size: 10.4" H (26.4 cm)
