Description:

Mali, Dogon culture, 20th century. Door locks are found in Dogon society in many different styles ranging from abstract and stylized to anthropomorphic representations of ancestors. They are typically the bolt case found on wooden doors adorning as well as protecting granaries. This example is carved in the form of an abstract human figure, likely an ancestral figure, and is incised with intricate, stylized geometric carving. Placing the image of an ancestor on the door lock offers additional protection by making the door hallowed and sacrosanct. 20"T x 18"W.
