Ralph Kent (American, 1939-2007) and Pete Emslie (American, 20th century). "Walt's Cargo Chess Set" resin with wooden chessboard, ca. 1990's. Disney stamp on base of each piece and set is accompanied by a Disney Certificate of Verification signed by artists. A very rare prototype Disney chess set titled "Walt's Cargo" originally designed for a very limited production run of 750 sets and produced by the Fine Art wing of Disney, The Art of Disney. Designed by 35-year Disney character artist Ralph Kent and another Disney veteran, Pete Emsile, the set features all of the classic Disney characters - Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald Duck, Pluto, and more! - each as a hand-painted, cast-resin chess piece enclosed in their own cloth bag and housed in a compartmentalized box that was manufactured to look like a treasure chest. Accompanied by wooden chessboard. Size of board: 27" L x 27.3" W x 1.3" H (68.6 cm x 69.3 cm x 3.3 cm); of chest: 18.5" L x 13.5" W x 12.5" H (47 cm x 34.3 cm x 31.8 cm); of largest piece (Pete): 4.1" L x 3" W x 7" H (10.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 17.8 cm)
This amazing set was to be handled like other well-known collectible chess sets, with the buyer receiving one or two of the pieces every month, until the set was complete. Unfortunately, after producing the first few sets of figures, it was deemed too labor-intensive to be practically produced, consequently, we believe this is one of only a few sets that were ever made! The Imagineers created a terrific Cowboys and Indians-themed backstory for the set, and a "wanted" poster (with the legend printed on it) was also created, laying out how the sides for the game were chosen, beginning with a coin toss, which was won by Mickey Mouse. The other team captain (or King in this case) was Pistol Pete.

- Condition: Disney stamp on base of each piece and set is accompanied by a Disney Certificate of Verification signed by artists. Many of the pieces have small repairs with break lines and adhesive visible and one nephew of Donald Duck is missing feather. Minor scratches, abrasions, and stains to front of board and deep grooves to verso that do not affect front. Some light surface wear, but otherwise, nice presentation with great details. All pieces and board are included and ready for play!
