Description:

Greece, probably late 5th to 4th century BCE. A tall calyx krater, completely buff - perhaps made to be painted and never finished. The calyx krater style is similar to the bell krater, and is so named for the placement of its handles, which are low down on the body and have an upward curling form, thought by early antiquarians to resemble the calyx of a flower. The earliest known example of this style is from the third quarter of the 6th century, and they were made until the 4th century, with their bodies slowly elongating over time. This item was probably made to be placed into a tomb but it was never completed for an unknown reason. Size: 12" W x 14.5" H (30.5 cm x 36.8 cm).
