Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivia / Machalilla culture, ca. 1500 - 300 BCE. Anthropomorphic vessel from light greenish stone with white occlusions, cut and polished. The strongly abstracted figure of a jaguar is depicted with square body, spiral-shaped winding tail and head with large bare teeth. The corpus is shaped as slightly deepened mortar. The jaguar represented the prototypical potent alter ego of the shamans of the pre-Columbian Central America. It is assumed that objects of this kind served as ritual mortars and also as burial objects for shamans. Size: 4.4" L x 2.125" H (11.2 cm x 5.4 cm)
