Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic, Campania, ca. 3rd to 4th century BCE. An exceptional blackware wheel-thrown guttus form with a hand-modeled lionness' head dramatically emerging from one side, and a makers mark beneath the handle in the form of an X with a line through the middle, perhaps an abstract dragonfly. The form consists of a characteristically low, rounded cushion-like body upon a ring foot. Beneath the teardrop finial lid, the flat, closed top has a central depression framed by a flanged ring. The curved, almost ring-shaped strap handle is set on the shoulder. At a right angle to this is a hand modeled and incised lion's head with an open mouth that serves as the spout. The body of the vessel is meticulously ribbed. A very rare example of a blackware guttus with a theatrical spout in the form of a ferocious wild feline! Size: 5" W x 3.125" H (12.7 cm x 7.9 cm)
