Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A small hollow pottery figural whistle in the form of a seated drummer, complete with drum, wearing an enormous crested headdress and large disc decorations (probably ear spools) resting on its shoulders. The legs blend into the drum and the face is stylized with with large eyes, a prominent nose, and a huge nose ring; all decoration is made of applied pottery. These figures were made to grace tombs dug in shafts below the houses of West Mexican families during this time period; musician depictions are a common theme and the Colima must have been a very musical people. Size: 3.75" W x 5.45" H (9.5 cm x 13.8 cm)
