Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Bolivia, Chiribaya or Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku), ca. 900 to 1200 CE. An attractive, hand-built terracotta bowl adorned with a decorative register of polychrome linear, stepped, and abstract geometric designs, all slip-painted in hues of dark-brown, russet, and umber atop a beige ground. One side features an abstract anthropomorphic face with large eyes, a toothy grin, and a broad headband; the verso design represents the backside of the figure's head. Stepped designs adorn the interior of the rim in hues of espresso and cream, and the cavity exhibits a light-orange coloration. Highly-burnished and full of character, this is a fabulous example from ancient Bolivia! Size: 6" W (15.2 cm).
