Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely, delicate 91% silver vessel - undoubtedly made to be a beaker for holding wine - with a hemispherical lower body, flattened base, and tapering upper body that eventually flares out to an incredibly thin rim. Hold the vessel just underneath the rim and feel its pleasing balance and weight in your hand. Silver vessels belonged to the Roman elite and were made by skilled silversmiths; the wealthy used them at banquets, displayed them in their homes, and were buried with them after death. Size: 3.7" W x 5" H (9.4 cm x 12.7 cm); silver is 91%; total weight: 210.6 grams

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Neil Phillips collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1990s
