Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely pair of 18K gold hoop earrings, each one adorned with lovely seashell forms. The seashell was most associated Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love who was born of the sea. Recall the famous Renaissance painting by Sandro Botticelli - "The Birth of Venus" (ca. 1486) depicting the goddess approaching the shore after her birth, emerging as a statuesque nude beauty upon a large seashell.
