Description:

Medieval Islamic world, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A striking single gold earring comprised of 90% gold (equivalent to 21K+) in the form of a bird, minutely crafted from gold sheet. It has a spherical base with two pearls threaded on a gold wire dangling from it. The bird and base are richly covered with filigree work and fine granulation. On the bird's back is a loop, with a plain wire hoop through it. Two gold wires with tiny gold beads dangle from the beak and tail. A pale red color in the lower profile areas of the bird's body may be the result of cinnabar pigment. Would make a fantastic pendant! Size: 0.9" W x 1.45" H (2.3 cm x 3.7 cm); gold quality: 90% or equivalent to 21K+; total weight: 3.4 grams.
