Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Finely carved from a pale blue-green jadeite, this is an avian axe god, the lower section a nice celt form, the upper section representing a bird from the Costa Rican rainforest with a delicately delineated beak, striated bands, and jutting crest feathers that look a bit like another, smaller bird is perched atop the head. Laterally drilled behind the beak to create a pendant. Size: 0.75" W x 3.8" H (1.9 cm x 9.7 cm); 4.2" H (10.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
