Description:

Magna Graecia, Italy, Apulia/Daunian, ca. 4th century BCE. A large terracotta kyathos (dipper) with wide strap handle, bulbous body, and large, flat rim above a narrowed neck. The handle of the strap is zoomorphic, with a large eye on each side and a dense geometric pattern above the eyes that gives it the look of an octopus. Size: 7.3" W x 9" H (18.5 cm x 22.9 cm)

Daunian society was a mixture of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area. The shapes of the vessels remained strongly influenced by the Italians -- this one, for example, is a form of the Greek kyathos with a flat, long, looping handle, but the wideness of the strap is purely Daunian. Many of these vessels, like this one, were ornamented with bands of geometric decoration called listati. This particular example has squared-off, linear designs in black and red over a cream background.
