Description:

Italy, Apulia/Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A beautiful example of Daunian pottery, influenced by the cultural commingling of the native Italians and colonist Greeks who settled in the area at this time. This is an olpe, with a tall, strap-like handle. The handle is zoomorphic, with a face made from drilled holes and two tall, striped, horn-like protrusions. It has a broad rim and was made to pour wine without spilling it. The designs are linear bands of black and red on a creamy slip, called listati. The wide strap handle is a particular signifier of Daunian pottery. Size: 6.75" L x 5.75" W x 7.5" H (17.1 cm x 14.6 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
