Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Daunian, ca. 6th to 4th century BCE. An attractive wheel thrown kantharos with a rounded body and a flared rim standing on a petite pedestal foot. Two handles arch up from the shoulder and attach into the mouth of the vessel. The buff hued body is decorated with a series of black and red slip bands from the foot to the rim, and black bars alongside the handles. Daunian society was a mixture of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area and their pottery was subsequently influenced by both cultures. Daunian pottery is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones, as we see in this fine example! Size: 5.375" W x 4.15" H (13.7 cm x 10.5 cm)
