Description:

Southern Italy, Daunian, ca. 5th century BCE. A polychrome terracotta askos, finely modeled with a large, flat-topped spout, a strap handle across the top, and a bifurcated tail, all hand-painted with stylized linear and curvilinear motifs in orange, black and cream hues. Such vessels were created for storing precious liquids, and the upright handle made it easy to control the amounts one poured. This example was made to mimic an avian form, with its two-pointed tail, wide body, and upturned head carefully painted with an endearing stylized 'face' with eyes and beak. A lovely example! Size: 8.75" L x 6.75" H (22.2 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
