Description:

Damien Gomes (American, active 21st century). "Breast Plate" mixed media on board, 2018. Signed and dated on verso. A captivating neo-expressionist painting by self-taught abstract figurative artist Damian Gomes, presenting a Native American chief, half-length with his hands crossed in front of his chest. As highlighted in the title, he wears a magnificent hairpipe breastplate, traditionally worn as armor when hunting and during battle, but also worn during ceremonies and dances and believed to possess medicinal qualities. In addition, a grand feathered headdress crowns his visage. A brilliant painting delineated with Gomes' signature loose, kinetic brushwork and vibrant palette, set in a custom frame. Size of painting: 20" L x 16" W (50.8 cm x 40.6 cm) Size of frame: 23.1" L x 19.1" W (58.7 cm x 48.5 cm)

Hairpipe Breastplates were first created by the Comanche in the 19th century, but were later made and worn by many other Great Plains indigenous peoples as well. The term "Hairpipe" refers to the long, slender, hollow beads that were made from cow bone or buffalo horn.

Artist Biographical Statement: "Damian Gomes is a self-taught abstract figurative painter working primarily in oil and acrylic. With references to surrealism, Gomes' wildly gestural neo-expressionist forms explore themes of life and death, socio-cultural phenomena, and other existential questions. Frequently macabre, sensual, and darkly comic human images figure prominently into Gomes' work. The journey from the sublime to the absurd is populated by religious and profane characters, and rendered in an introspective, self-effacing style. 'What the completed painting says is sometimes the answer to a question I hadn't yet asked.' Gomes lives and works between Phoenix and Los Angeles." (artist's website)
