Description:

Ancient Near East, Cyprus, Middle Cypriot, ca. 1900 to 1650 BCE; Cypro-Geometric, ca. 1050 to 750 BCE. A wonderful pair of pottery vessels from the ancient Mediterranean: a Middle Cypriot bilbil and a Cypro-Geometric column krater. Boasting a vibrant hue of red, the bilbil exhibits a rotund body, a round shoulder, a tall, cylindrical neck, a flared spout, and a tubular handle the connects shoulder to rim. The body is adorned with 2 horizontal bands of an incised triangular pattern that meet at a protruding embellishment at the front of the vessel. Alternatively, the column krater is enveloped in a rich shade of deep gray and presents a conical foot, a globular body with a wide hip, a corseted neck, and a flared rim flanked by twin, arching, ribbon-form handles that connect the rim to the sloped shoulder. Size of largest: 2.6" Diameter x 4.5" H (6.6 cm x 11.4 cm)

  • Condition: Column krater has repair and restoration to rim and handles, as well as resurfacing in some areas. Bilbil has chipping to rim, neck, and handle. Both have nicks and abrasions throughout. Otherwise, bilbil is intact and both are excellent with nice earthen deposits. Great encrustations to bilbil. Collection labels on bases of both.
