Description:

Ancient Greece, Cyprus, early Iron Age, ca. 900 to 600 BCE. A lovely wheel-thrown bichrome terracotta bail amphora with a flat base, bulbous body with a single protruding spout, wide neck, and flared rim with a single strap stirrup handle across the top. The vessel is comprised of light beige-hued clay adorned with contrasting brown bands that line the circumference of the body, neck, spout, and rim. Size: 7.5" H (19 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex T.Z. collection, Munich, Germany, acquired before 1992 & with excerpt from previous auction catalog, partly glued, probably Kunsthaus at the museum - Carola van Ham, Cologne.

  • Condition: Repaired from several pieces with some restoration to body. Age-commensurate surface wear, minor scratches and losses to body, rim, spout, and foot, with mineral deposits throughout. Two old collection stickers reading "16/369" and "1060/26," respectively, are on the bottom of foot, and "IV 43" is written on bottom of foot in black paint.
