Description:

Western Europe, England, Romano-British, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A duck-shaped brooch crafted from copper alloy, featuring crescent-shaped recessed panels designed for enamel inlays. Blue enamel and remnants of red are still visible. In southern Britain, the technique of enameling began around 200 BCE, evolving from the use of coral and opaque red glass to adorn bronze, silver, and gold objects. After the Roman colonization of Britain in 43 CE, this enameling style captivated the Romans, who incorporated it into a wide variety of small decorative items. The presence of blue enamel, a later addition to the decorative palette, suggests this brooch likely dates no earlier than the late 2nd century CE. Size: 1.2" L x 0.65" W x 0.6" H (3 cm x 1.7 cm x 1.5 cm)
