Lot 165A
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 1400 to 1521 CE. This is a necklace with a black braided leather band and simple silver wire wrapped around a finely-shaped obsidian "eccentric" in the form of a snake. These obsidian carvings - made by percussive force - are more commonly associated with the Maya, but the Aztec also had them - although there is some uncertainty as to whether they were actually manufactured by earlier civilizations revered by the Aztecs, like the people of Teotihuacan, whose artwork was often taken by the Aztecs and treasured in the same way that we collect antiquities today. Size: 16" L (40.6 cm)
Provenance: Wearable, one-of-a-kind custom-designed ancient art jewelry from Muzeion Gallery, Dallas, TX
