Description:

New World, Cretaceous Period, ca. 80 million years ago. A pair of fossilized dinosaur eggs, hardened through mineralization into a red-brown stone, but with the egg shells partially exposed from the original matrix on which they sit. The shell structure is wonderfully easy to see. At their widest point, the eggs are approximately 5.5" wide (14 cm), and they are elongated spheroids. Based on size and shape, these are probably eggs belonging to a species of theropod. Size of full eggs: 10.5" L x 5.5" W x 5.2" H (26.7 cm x 14 cm x 13.2 cm)

Dinosaur eggs are rarely found, and are often found missing portions because their infant denizens hatched and broke free. The fragility of the egg surface means that very special conditions have to take place in order for them to survive the fossilization process. These eggs do not seem to have hatched - maybe they contain embryos that could be revealed by gently dissolving the shells in acid!
