Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Khouribga region, Late Cretaceous, ca. 80 to 70 million years ago. The lower fossilized jaw from a prehistoric Mosasaurus, a massive aquatic lizard, with 10 original teeth! The largest tooth measures 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) in length and the surrounding sandstone is set in the original plaster jacket that reinforces the specimen. Mosasaurs were carnivorous hunters, possessing a streamlined body, flattened tail, and webbed feet and somewhat resembled flippered crocodiles. This jaw is a spectacular testament to their predatory behavior, and interestingly their jaws were hinged which enabled mosasaurs to gulp down its prey nearly whole, similar to modern day snakes! Size: 21" L x 8" W (53.3 cm x 20.3 cm); largest tooth: 1.75" L x 1" W (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
