Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Central Highlands, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A hand-carved volcanic stone figure of sizable form seated with bent legs and knees tucked beneath resting elbows. The figure holds an ambiguous object to the mouth in both hands, perhaps food, a smoking implement, or a musical instrument. A large headdress with projecting flanges and loop ring patterns on top rests low on the figure's brow, perhaps a designation of rank or shamanic status; a small cavity atop the head was likely used to deposit offerings or incense. Size: 6.2" L x 6.8" W x 14.125" H (15.7 cm x 17.3 cm x 35.9 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
