Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Central Highlands, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. Carved from a porous grey volcanic stone, a mesmerizing figure crouching in a seated position with folded arms upon upraised knees, legs parted so as to reveal his genitalia, feet firmly on the ground, his back curved with a delineated spine. His head is detailed with bold facial features - coffee bean shaped eyes, a pronounced nose, and an open mouth and projecting ears, all crowned by a curly coiffure or textured cap. An intriguing personage - perhaps an ancient Costa Rican 'thinker' engaged in deep contemplation. Size: 9.375" L x 7" W x 12" H (23.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 30.5 cm)

Provenance: private Redwood City, California, USA collection, purchased from Malter Galleries, California, USA, sometime between 1985-1990
