Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Central Highlands, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A fascinating stone figure shown seated cross legged with hands on waist and huge head facing forward. Both stylized and minimalist in form, the ancient figure gazes forth from slender eyes beneath a straight brow; his visage comprised of bulging cheeks, flared nostrils, and closed lips, all flanked by a pair of large, ornament-adorned ears. Carved from volcanic stone, figures like this one were included in burials, and perhaps made initially for domestic use. Size: 5.4" W x 9.4" H (13.7 cm x 23.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
