Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Central Highlands, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A classic "Sukia" figure carved from volcanic basalt stone, depicted squatting with upraised knees, right arm resting upon knees, left hand with finely carved fingers gripping a tubular shaped smoking implement, his back curved with skeletal spine characteristically clearly carved. The head is also finely carved with a pronounced jaw line and nice angular facial features, ears, eyes, and nose carved in low to high relief. Size: 6-1/2"H x 6-1/4" (16.5 x 15.9 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
