Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1525 CE. A fine pottery vessel in the fascinating form of a complex zoomorphic figure displaying the projecting head of a canine, the slender arms of a human, and the spiked spine of a reptile. Boasting hand-painted decoration resembling crested waves, the rotund animal is shown seated with arms extending downward from bulging shoulders above an erect phallus. He gazes outward as though entranced, perky ears alert as the bulbous spout of the vessel rises from behind his head. Size: 6.8" W x 8.6" H (17.3 cm x 21.8 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored with minor areas of overpainting - all very well done. Minor chips to left ear and rim, as well as light surface wear as expected with age. Otherwise, great presentation and vibrant remaining pigments. Nice manganese deposits to surface.
