Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 1 to 1000 CE. A small standing figure, carved from a simple river cobble stone with great skill. The figure - like many relating to shamans - has both female (small, perky breasts, maybe a pregnant belly) and male (an erect phallus) characteristics. The face is almost simian, with large rounded holes drilled through the ears - presumably to attach gold rings, feathers, or some other decorative element. The artist has taken care to outline the musculature of the legs, giving a fantastical piece some naturalism. Size: 3.8" W x 5.6" H (9.7 cm x 14.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Massachusetts collection acquired before 1990
