Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fantastical figure, carved from porous volcanic stone, depicting a man with a fierce, transformative crocodile head, nude aside from a huge multi-lobed pectoral and segmented pyramidal headdress. The figure stands proudly upon broad feet and stocky legs with delineated genitalia in-between, with thick arms bent to wide hips, and a portly abdomen tracing up to a thick neck. The abstract head boasts an expressive countenance composed of a curled nose above bared fangs as well as large semicircular ears with biconically-drilled holes. Size: 5.5" W x 9.25" H (14 cm x 23.5 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-John Rich collection, California, USA. John Rich was a notable Hollywood producer/director.

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces with restoration and resurfacing along break lines. Restoration to most of one leg. Nicks and abrasions to limbs, body, and head, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
