Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste Nicoya Region, ca. 500 CE. An expressive white stone mace head with the stone now mottled from deposits. One side is carved into an expressive owl face with huge, round eyes and a long, pointed beak. A cylindrical socket is behind the head. The owl is frequently associated in Central American iconography with the underworld, death, and shamanism. The level of craftsmanship on this beautiful piece indicates that it was worth the time put in to create it, and that a highly skilled artisan - possibly someone who specialized in making such objects - created it for someone wealthy. Size: 3.45" W x 2.25" H (8.8 cm x 5.7 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private T.S. collection, San Diego County, California, USA, acquired between 1980 and 1995; ex-Orlando, Florida, USA collection.
