Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 600 to 900 CE. Very nice mottled green stone mace head, most likely for ceremonial or funerary purposes. Created from both pecking and string cuts, with large central shaft hole, raised nodes over the head, curved beak and shallow eyes. The head might represent a bird know as an "ornate hawk eagle" based on the tufts above the head. Nice example! Size: 3.375" L x 2.5" W x 2" H (8.6 cm x 6.4 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
