Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1st to 6th century CE. A large ceremonial mace head made from stone into the form of a double headed creature - perhaps a bird or feline, with a hooked tail. A hafting shaft was bored through center for attaching to a wood handle. Based on various pottery sculptures from throughout the Pre-Columbian world, figural maces like this example were often highly symbolic objects carried by rules and gods alike as visible signs of their power and authority. Size: 9" L x 3" W x 3" H (22.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 7.6 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Stanley L. Kaufman collection, acquired before 1981
