Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A hand-carved stone axe god figure of rare form that depicts a nude woman. The lower edge is tapered like a blade head - hence the name "axe god" - while the upper half features the feminine bust. Hands are clasped atop the belly while ring-form breasts are centered on the chest, and several string-cut grooves create the abstract facial features. Suspension holes are drilled laterally through the neck as well as directly through the forehead. Size: 0.51" L x 1.76" W x 4.49" H (1.3 cm x 4.5 cm x 11.4 cm); 5.51" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
