Description:

Pre-Columbian, ca. 1000 to 1200 CE. A large and impressive standing male figure carved from volcanic stone. He stands naked, his stomach slightly thrust out, his hands at his sides and his fingers, toes, and knees finely detailed. His face has huge almond-shaped eyes that dominate his head. Wide eyes are often seen as an iconographic tell for hallucinogenic drugs taken for religious purposes; perhaps this figure is a shaman. There are remains of white pigment on the body. Comes with custom stand. Size: 8.25" W x 16.1" H (21 cm x 40.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex Collection of Will Barnet, (b. 1911) an American artist known for his paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints depicting casual scenes of daily life and in transcendent dreamlike worlds. A longtime resident of the National Arts Club, Barnet died in New York City on November 13, 2012, at the age of 101.
