Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. An immensely charming rotund figural rattle, made of an unslipped redware. It stands on two hoof-like legs and holds its arms, decorated with many applied bracelets, up to its chest, holding a small item that looks like a rattle itself. The figure has a stricking conical hat with flaps that hang down around the head. The face has round eyes, a huge nose with emphasized nostrils, and a wide, large-lipped mouth. Size: 2.45" W x 5.25" H (6.2 cm x 13.3 cm)

The figure seems caught between human and animal characteristics, suggesting that it represents a shaman or magical being. The rattle is still functional!
