Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A wonderful terracotta vessel in the form of a human head wearing a perched bird as a headdress. A thick, narrowed brow spans across the forehead from ear to ear, resting just above coffee bean-shaped eyes, a pointed nose, and gently parted lips. The bottom of his head is lined by a chinstrap, while a narrow opening at the top leads to the hollow interior. Quite stylized in its depiction, the bird faces opposite the face, displaying a long, downward-pointing beak, a prominent cere, annular eyes, and spread wings, each pierced with a petite hole to serve for suspension. Size: 4.3" Diameter x 4.7" H (10.9 cm x 11.9 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 205. Appraised for $450 by Marianne Huber in 2014.
