Description:

Pre-Columbian, Linea Vieja, Costa Rica, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. This is a small piece of molded pottery with four finger holes along its body to produce music. The tail is the mouthpiece. The lizard's head has a large flared crest. Ocarinas, whistles, and rattles were all common items in pre-Columbian Latin America; these pieces often depicted the colorful wildlife native to the area. This one can still be played by the adventurous! Size: 3-3/4" L x 2-1/4" H x 1-1/2" W (9.5 cm x 5.7 cm x 3.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private New York Collection; ex-private Connecticut collection, acquired mid 20th century.
