**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, probably Nicoya area, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A set of 2 hand-built pottery vessels from ancient Costa Rica, a large bowl and a double-chambered jar. Each chamber of the petite double jar features a rounded base, a carinated midsection, and a flared rim with a handle arching in the middle, and negative resist triangular motifs decorate the upper bodies; solid red pigment adorns the bottoms. The larger jar is of nearly spherical form with a thin, overhanging rim and exterior surfaces decorated with dense foliage and floral motifs via the negative resist technique. Size of largest: 6.7" Diameter x 5.1" H (17 cm x 13 cm)

  • Condition: Larger vessel has stabilization to a few fissures stemming from rim, and repair to petite vessel along midsection; both vessels with adhesive residue along break lines. Both pieces have minor chips, abrasions, and fading to pigment commensurate with age, and light encrustations. Nice preservation to pigment throughout.
