Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A gorgeous, hand-built pottery vessel of a round-bottomed form with a cylindrical body, a sloped shoulder, and a flared rim with a thick lip. The burnished surfaces are adorned with orange slip that forms the ground atop which black and red-orange pigment presents abstract jaguars and mesmerizing geometric motifs. The decorative programs across the vessel exhibit recognizable influence from high-quality Maya artisans, perhaps as an indicator of the relationship between the Costa Ricans and the Maya to the north prior to the downfall of the Maya civilization. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 6.7" W x 7.75" H (17 cm x 19.7 cm)
