Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste Nicoya region, ca. 800 to 1350 CE. A vessel in the form of a harpy eagle, the distinctive crest at the top of the head, face and wings of the have strong human-like as well as avian qualities. The head is hollow with a pottery ball inserted within that functions as a rattle. The piriform body displays a cream ground atop which red and black pigment creates highly detailed feathered wings and a tail. The harpy eagle held significant symbolic meaning for several Pre-Columbian cultures in the Americas, particularly among the indigenous peoples of Central and South America. It was often revered for its strength, power, and dominance as a top predator in the rainforest, Their hunting prowess, and stealth may have been metaphors for the warrior class in Costa Rica.   • Condition: Small loss to right side of feather crest on the head. Chips and abrasions throughout, but otherwise intact without repairs. Fading and losses to pigments, but overall great condition.

Our shippers of choice are DHL for International shipments and UPS for domestic shipments, but we are able to ship via other carriers at the buyer's expense as deemed necessary or by request.

For shipments of oversize items, Artemis Gallery will assist the buyer in working with a third-party shipping provider. For shipments outside of the USA, customs and duties may apply upon entry into said country, and this fee, if any, is the buyer's responsibility.
