Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A set of 2 hand-built pottery figures of characteristically abstract forms, each boasting polychrome pigments across stone-burnished bodies. The first figure presents with conical legs, breasts adorned in cruciform symbols, and a coiffure that is half beige and half brown. The larger figure is densely decorated with black linear motifs with 2 areas of red near the breasts and abdomen, and the wide head is surmounted by a tall headdress with a recessed cavity on top. Size of larger: 3" W x 5.4" H (7.6 cm x 13.7 cm)

  • Condition: Smaller figure repaired from a few pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; larger figure is intact and very good. Both figures with minor chips and abrasions, light fading to pigment, and earthen deposits within some recessed areas. Nice preservation to pigment remains overall.
