Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya / Guanacaste, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A fantastical ocarina in the form of a double headed bird- the brownware surface incised and stippled with linear patterning. A set of 6 note holes are drilled into the body and the smaller bird head, and the other head projects from under the tail / mouthpiece. Whistling flute instruments were important musical instruments and birds were regarded as supernatural beings that could fly, sing, and imitate human speech. Size: 4" L x 3" Diameter (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
