Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya, ca. 200 BCE - 200 CE. This female effigy possesses the elegant stylings of the Guanacaste-Nicoya artisans. The striking trichromatic ceramic style in red and black on cream ground with its glossy burnished finish demonstrates fine technique. She is quintessentially female and her pose accentuates her femininity with her breasts emerging over her swollen belly and legs parted to reveal the region of her womb painted red, the center of her femininity. The entire surface is ornately decorated with Flowing geometric patterns adorn her headdress, body paint, and costume accentuating the curves of her body and captivating the eye. Black spotting particularly visible on backside represents manganese oxide deposits that develop with prolonged burial.
