Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya or Atlantic Watershed & Chorotega culture, ca. 300 to 1400 CE. A group of 4 hand-built pottery figurines. One seated figure also functions as a vessel, with a rimmed opening upon its head. The short brownware figure is a whistle, with a note holes on the neck and back, the third tripod leg has a vent hole. The other two are fashioned in the same style; thick arms resting on thighs, broad heads, and painted with linear black and red motifs. Size of burnished figure: 2.5" L x 2.5" W x 3.75" H (6.4 cm x 6.4 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection; one was acquired from Heritage Auctions, June 21st, 2019, lot #: 56085.

  • Condition: Repairs and restoration. Whistle is figure is repaired, break line on verso, mouthpiece reattached, and whistle does not function. Lightest colored figure, restored with head reattached and pressure fissures on stomach, earthen encrustations on interior and flaking when handled. Stable pressure fissures and chips on the vessel figure, otherwise intact. Highly burnished figure is intact with nice manganese deposits.
