Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous pottery incensario in the form of a nude female shown seated and extensively hand-painted with elaborate geometric motifs. Her attenuated limbs wrap about her broad, cylindrical body flanking her prominently delineated breasts, navel, and genitalia. Surmounted by the flared rim of the vessel, her stylized visage is comprised of heavy-lidded eyes, a naturalistic nose, plump lips, and a pointed chin. A raised band extends from her petite ears to form a straight brow, while black-painted interlaced designs adorn her shoulders and chest. Her cheeks additionally feature concentric crosses, perhaps intended as ceremonial scarification. A beautifully ornate example from ancient Costa Rica! Size: 11" Diameter x 11" H (27.9 cm x 27.9 cm)
