Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A fish out of water - this finely carved jade bead of a compressed cylindrical form is skillfully incised to represent a fish with cross-hatched scales, a schematically delineated tail, a wide open mouth, and a drilled eye. In addition to this clever piscine iconography is the inherent beauty of the pale green mottled with white jade stone. Drilled laterally to string, an exquisite example hand carved and polished from a beautiful jade stone of rich coloration. A fish out of water that nevertheless conjures imagery of those pristine blue Costa Rican waters. Size: 6.125" L x .75" W (15.6 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private R.D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired over 25 years from various major galleries.
