Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. An unusual pendant, hand-carved and string-cut from a brilliant blue-green jade, the overall form representing the universal symbols for male and female merged into one, the upper male section comprised of a pair of crested birds representing a couple in profile, their wings/bodies incised with zigzag and striated motifs, the lower section, a perfect circle representing the female. The openwork makes for wonderful suspension opportunities. Laterally perforated. Custom stand. Size: 5" H (12.7 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on stand

The avian creatures depicted on this piece, with their downturned beaks and feathered crests, harken the tropical environs of Central America. Birds, as sky animals, were revered throughout the Pre-Columbian world as messengers between humankind and the celestial realm. This imagery in combination with the male/female symbolism featured here make for a remarkable example, clearly the creation of a deep thinker!
